FAQs
WHAT IS THE GOVERNOR GENERAL’S CUP?A class open to registered three year old Canadian breds (foaled in Canada) capable of excelling in the hunter, jumper, dressage or eventing disciplines. To be judged in hand – 50% on movement and 50% on conformation & type.

WHAT ARE THE ‘QUALIFIER CLASSES’?As Ontario has more horses wanting to compete in the Cup Classes than number of entries accepted – Ontario qualifying classes are held to determine those that will be eligible to enter the Royal Cup classes.
There are 2 qualifying classes for both the Governor General’s Cup and Lieutenant Governor’s Cup. Horses are not required to compete in both qualifiers, however total points earned in both classes will determine the top qualifying number.
HOW ARE THE POINTS ASSIGNED?
Points are awarded and multiplied by the number of horses shown in the class. 1st – 25, 2nd – 22, 3rd -20, 4th – 18, 5th – 16, 6th – 15, decreasing by 1 point for each placing to 20th (ie: 1st place of 30 horses: 25 x 30=750 / 17th of 30 horses: 4 x 30 = 120)
WHAT ABOUT OTHER PROVINCES?Horses from other provinces are invited to apply for entry directly to the Royal. Exhibitor must provide documented proof of showing in equivalent three year old in-hand &/or under saddle classes which have been judged conformation, movement and suitability as a sport horse.Preference is given to horses with best results.
DOES THE HORSE HAVE TO BE REGISTERED?Yes, registration papers are required and a copy must accompany the entry.Notification of papers pending will not be accepted.
WHAT BREEDS ARE ACCEPTABLE?The classes are for ‘sport horses’ or those breeds that excel in the hunter, jumper, dressage or eventing disciplines. The classes are not limited to Canadian Sport Horses.
WHAT IS THE INVOLVEMENT OF THE CANADIAN SPORT HORSE ASSOCIATION?The Canadian Sport Horse Association facilitates the qualifying classes in Ontario and provides assistance and information to those in other provinces.
