No Hickstead semen available for North America

By Tracy Hanes

Unfortunately, North American breeders hoping to buy Hickstead semen are out of luck.

The agents for the late great show jumping stallion say there is none in North America and the approximate 50 doses available in Europe cannot be shipped to North America.

If you have a mare in Europe, there is a slight chance you may be able to get a dose, although details on the availability of the European semen have not been confirmed.

At a press conference days after the sudden death of Hickstead, Eric Lamaze's Olympic gold medal mount and the winner of numerous competitions around the world, Lamaze said the stallion was difficult to collect and plans were to concentrate on his breeding career after he retired. Hickstead collapsed and died after jumping a round in a grand prix in Verona, Italy. Cause of death was a ruptured aorta.

Hickstead does have about 100 offspring on the ground worldwide, so at least his line will continue. Hickstead was one of only two Platinum status Canadian Sport Horse approved stallions, the other being grand prix dressage horse Lingh.
