National Foal Championship - 2006

Quebec-bred filly, Lexi, earns $4,000.00 for owner/breeder Jean Casselman of Gatineau, Quebec.

Lexi, a beautiful bay filly by Ikoon out of the Thoroughbred mare, Me No Kiss Kiss by Tammany placed the highest in the country in the inaugural Canadian Sport Horse Association 2006 National Foal Championship. The imported sire, Ikoon (by Libero H out of the Nimmerdor daughter, Zalita) has been standing at stud at Ashland Farm in Ontario for the past 2 seasons after a couple of quiet years on the West Coast. Ikoon is one of only 2 Libero H sons approved with the CSHA. Me No Kiss Kiss is a 10 year old Florida bred mare that has had two Thoroughbred foals for the Casselman’s prior to her Canadian Sport Horse filly.

When the CSHA undertook the daunting task of organizing a national competition, the Board of Directors determined that for a truly “National” competition to take place the format for judging CSHA breeding efforts had to meet several criteria. First, it had to have consistent judging across the country and secondly, that judging had to take place within the span of a couple of weeks. Thirdly, the incentive had to be worthwhile for the breeders to travel with foals. Bob Henselwood graciously offered to cover over 5,000 km over 3 weekends in order to get the job done. The effort and planning paid off.
Bob commented, “I thought the CSHA Foal Championship was a great idea and that the quality of the foals was very good across the country, showing a change from the big, well put together model to a more athletic youngster. Breeders are getting the message that it takes athleticism in their youngsters to create value.”

The prize money going back to the breeders was just the impetus that some breeders needed to get out and show off their youngsters. In each Regional Qualifying Competition prize money paid 50/50 to owner and breeder.
The top foals in each Region were:
Sept. 24th – Brooklin, Ontario - Pirate B (Pablo x Gretchen x Dressman) O/B Beasley Farms Sept. 30th – Calgary, Alberta – Wintour (Wyman x Kestrel III x Zarco) O/B Michaela Berlie
Oct 1st – Ottawa, Ontario – Lexi (Ikoon x Me No Kiss Kiss x Tammany) O/B Jean Casselman
Oct. 8th – Langley, B.C. – Fernando (Freestyle x Phantasia III x Pacific Sunset) O/B Sabina Arnoldt

We saw 21 stallions represented by 35 foals. They were Alla ‘Czar, Arius (2), Asher (4), Bergamon, Double Diamond, Freestyle (3), Guaranteed Gold, Hadrian, Ikoon (4), Lando, Foxwind SL (2), Novalis, Pablo, President, Regardez, Rio Grande, Royal Senna, Sempatico M, Tagaelen (2), VDL Ulando H and Wyman.
******************************************************************************** TOPS IN THE REGIONAL QUALIFIERS
First Regional Qualifier – Oshawa
The first regional qualifying class of the CSHA National Foal Championship was held during the Ontario Chapter Breeders Show, September 24th at Heather Brazier’s Thornlea Stables, Brooklin, Ontario. Of the 15 entrants, eight 1st Premiums and four 2nd Premiums were awarded. Beasley Farms’ colt, Pirate B (by Pablo and out of Gretchen by Dressman) garnered the top spot of the day along with his 1st Premium. The sire, Pablo II, a 19 year old Pilot son that currently stands at Rainbow Equus Meadows in California, has over 500 offspring competing in both jumping and dressage and presently has 2 foals with the CSHA. Gretchen is a black mare of Hanoverian breeding and this is her first registered foal with in the CSHA studbook. Silvia and Richard Dixon of Beasley Farm, Schomberg, Ont., being both the breeder and owner of Pirate B received $1000.00 in prize money. According to event organizer, Soo Olafsen, “The winners were so thrilled to get a huge check (literally!) that they displayed it proudly covering the whole window of their truck.”

Second Regional Qualifier – Calgary
The second Regional Qualifier was held on September 30th at Priddis View Farms, south of Calgary, Alberta. It appears that many Alberta breeders were happy to leave money on the table with only 3 fillies showing up on the incredibly beautiful fall day. The $1,000.00 first place and a first premium was awarded to the chestnut filly, Wintour (by Wyman out of Kestrel III) is owned and bred by CSHA junior breeder Michaela Berlie of Slipstream Farm, Okotoks, Alberta. This was the first foal bred by Michaela and she purchased the stallion service to Wyman in the CSHA 2005 Stallion Service Auction. Wyman, a young stallion by Warkanson out of the Weltmeyer daughter, Windhuk, was bred and owned by the Brinkmann family of Equitop Farm, New Norway, Alberta. Wyman was the top placed stallion at his Alberta CSHA Inspection in 2005. Kestrel III is a homebred mare and Wintour is her 2nd CSHA foal.

The final results of this qualifier are as follows:
1st: Wintour (Wyman x Kestrel III x Zarco) O / B : Michaela Berlie 1st Premium
2nd: Aprice (Arius x Compliment)
 O/B: Dagmar Fortmuller 1st Premium

Third Qualifier – Ottawa
The third Regional Qualifier was held during Autumn At Ashland at Ashland Farm, Ashton Ontario, just outside of Ottawa. The winner of this qualifier was the National Champion Foal, Lexi and her handler was Ron Davidson. Lexi was also Champion Weanling Filly and Overall Weanling Champion of the in hand classes in Ontario for 2006. On accepting her award, owner Jean Casselman said how appreciative she was to the people who encouraged her to have her mare inspected and register the offspring with CSHA. Also at the Ashland Farm Show, Lexi was awarded the Capt. G.T. Mayburry Cup for the Eastern Ontario/Quebec Regional Foal Championship for the in-hand classes. “This is a very special award for us as our handler, Ronnie Davidson and I go back to Elementary school. He grew up at the Mayburry Farm where his father was farm manager and my father and Captain Mayburry were friends. The fact that the Mayburry daughters, Lyn and Phyllis, along with grand daughter, Pam, attended to make the presentation was so very special for us.
Here’s an interesting tidbit, the 2nd place foal, Knowlian WF can trace his roots on the dam’s side to breeding stock of the Canadian Hunter Improvement Society of the 1940s through to the F.S. mare, Lady Arise #859 and Senator Jim, great grand parents of Coaly Isle.

The final results were as follows:
First Premium
1st: Lexi (Ikoon x Me No Kiss Kiss x Tammany) O/B: Jean Casselman
2nd: Knowlian WF (Ikoon x Morning Glory x Coaly Isle) O/B: Donna Jones
3rd: S.S. Bergren (Bergamon x Laura III x Longchamp) O: Lea Wouters B: Kathleen Richardson

Zoey (Royal Senna x Limerick x Lorbason) O: Carol Sharkey B: Nonius Equestrian
Fourth Qualifier - British Columbia
The BC qualifier took place Thanksgiving weekend at Dr. Ray and Judy Wise’s Fairway Farms in Milner. The numbers were light but the quality was certainly there with all of the foals receiving First Premiums. The winner was Sabina Arnoldt, with Freestyle colt, Fernando, the second CSH offspring that she has bred. Fernando’s dam, Phantasia III, is a young F1 mare, bred by Jennifer Arnoldt, and is by that “grand old man” of BC breeding, Pacific Sunset. Pacific Sunset’s CSHA offspring date from 1984 onwards, and his F1 son, Pacific Striker, owned by Bonnie Tolley of Ladysmith continues the legacy. Fernando’s sire, Freestyle, is one of the few Florestan sons in North America and is approved by numerous studbooks, with many champion offspring both at home and abroad. He was winner of his stallion test in Germany and was showing in dressage at the Prix St. Georges level in 2006.

The results for this qualifier were as follows:
First Premium
1st: Fernando (Freestyle x Phantasia III x Pacific Sunset) O/B: Sabina Arnoldt
2nd: Horatio (Hadrian x Harmony x Menelssohn) O/B: Danette Ball
3rd: Sahara (Sempatico M x Strathmiglo x Katowice) O: Michelle & Diane Bloom B: Martha Drennan

National Foal Championship - 2007

National Foal Championship - 2007

National Foal Championship - 2008

The Canadian Sport Horse Association National Foal Championship is into its 3rd consecutive year and, yet again, the well respected jumper stallion, Ikoon, figured prominently in the top placed foals.  “Harry”, as Ikoon is affectionately known at Creekside Farm, Calgary, Alberta, was sire of the winner of the 2008 CSHA National Foal Championship. Daisy Duke is by Ikoon out of the Gallipoli (Hann.) daughter, Ghia. This lovely bay filly, scored well in the Alberta regional competition garnering a 1st Premium and then succeeding as the top scoring foal nationally for 2008.  Ikoon, now 18 years old, has sired the National champion for 3 consecutive years. Owners Linda and Jacques Ackermann, keen supporters of the CSHA/Alberta Chapter, brought 4 fillies to the competition.

This year’s judge Lesley Marcou-Sibbitt (Ontario) gamely travelled across the country evaluating the 2008 crop of sport horse foals. As well as being a CSHA Inspector, Lesley is a British Horse Society Instructor and has 40 years experience as a Senior Judge of Breed Shows, Hunters, Jumpers and Equitation. She has bred, trained and shown horses for 4 decades, winning many championships including at the Royal Winter Fair in Toronto. She has hunted for 6 seasons with the Lake of Two Mountains Hunt in Hudson, Quebec.

Although the CSHA Board of Directors feels the Championship has made great headway in overcoming issues created by Canada’s vast geography, the Association is still looking for ways to improve the system of running a National Championship of this scope. The consensus is to continue to support the successful plan to keep one judge evaluating these youngsters from coast to coast and it is a commitment that is paying off in numerous ways.  Breeders feel that the consistency of assessment is the key to achieving a truly national championship. As a participant this in this year’s Championship, CSHA President Lisa Murphy commented, “The thing I find very intriguing about the National Foal Championship is the foal grading.  As this is a nascent program, we are going to have to wait for a few years to see if the Premium grading of the foals as part of the Championship competitions will be a factor we can use in predicting future performance.  Will these first and second premium babies go on to success in the competition ring?  As with anything to do with breeding – time will tell.”

The success of this program lies in the breeders’ hands.  Each province is encouraged to step up to the plate and organize its own regional championship with the support of the National Foal Championship Committee and the National office. The 2008 Championship saw the introduction of the Atlantic division which hosted the foal class along with a Breed Line Show at Riverside Sport Horses near Moncton, N.B.  The Alberta Chapter Regional Championship was held at Anderson Ranch, Calgary, in conjunction with Rocky Mountain Show Jumping’s Fall Classic tournament.  The two Ontario Regionals were stand alone events; one at Ashland Farm near Ottawa and the other at the Royal Canadian Riding Academy (formerly York Equestrian Centre).

“The great thing about this Championship,” says breeder, Paul Morgan, “is that it is uncomplicated and the money is very good.  You don’t have to nominate then wait years to reap the benefits like a futurity.”

There was a total of 17 stallions represented this year:  Asher (2), Cabardino (1), Case (1), Corland(1), ES Bonheur (1), Freestyle (2), Garamond (1), Guaranteed Gold (1), Ikoon (3), Ironman (1),  Jamestown (1), Portland (1), Raffaello (1), Roman K (2), Rotspon (1), Viva Voltaire(1), Xavier K (1),

TOPS IN THE 2009 REGIONAL QUALIFIERS

“What a wonderful year this has been for the CSHA National Foal Competition” ~ L. Sibbitt

President Lisa Murphy:

“We have just completed our most successful National Foal Championship to date!  Congratulations to all the participants, Provincial winners and our overall champion, Aritzia – well done.  The quality of foals was excellent; presenting our judge with some difficult choices. Thanks go to the sponsors and volunteers without whom the Championship would not have taken place.  Kudos goes to Barbara Jackson, the NFC Chair, for all her hard work, to her NFC committee and to all the people who helped on the day of the competitions.  Thank you!”

This was the 2nd time that the Ottawa Valley produced the overall champion in the NFC.  This year it was the gorgeous bay filly, Aritzia by Abke, the entry of Four Leaf Farms.  In 2006, accolades went to the Ikoon daughter, Lexi owned by Jean Casselman. The regional qualifiers were again organized to facilitate Judge Lesley Sibbitt travelling across the country within a span of a few weeks.   This year she logged over 6,000 km to make this event happen.  The babies were handled and turned out very professionally,” said Ms. Sibbitt. “After having travelled so many miles across the country and spending hours in airports, it was wonderful to see the effort that participants put into showing me how much they cared for their foals.  What a wonderful year this has been for the National Foal Competition.”

BC Regional Qualifier –Langley   August 29th

The first in the series of regional qualifiers took place in the heart of the beautiful Fraser Valley at the Thunderbird Show Park Summer Festival Show Jumping Tournament.  What better place to showcase to sport horse enthusiasts the promise of future athletes.

The top placed foal in this division was Sabine and Joachim Arnoldt’s Frodo by Freestyle. Freestyle is the well known foundation stallion of Dreamscape Farm and no newcomer to the North American breeding scene. One of the few Florestan sons in North America, Freestyle is approved by numerous studbooks with many champion offspring both at home and abroad. He was winner of his stallion test in Germany and was showing in Dressage.  Frodo’s dam, Phantasia III (F1), was bred by Jennifer Arnoldt and is by a mainstay of sport horse breeding on the west coast, Pacific Sunset.  Interestingly, Phantasia III is the dam of Fernando III, the 1st Premium foal and winner of the 2006 BC Regional Qualifier.

Alberta Regional Qualifier – Calgary   August 31st

This qualifier, although light in numbers, showcased the exceptional quality of sport horse breeding in Southern Alberta.  The colt that took top honours, Roosevelt by Regardez was out of Ghia, the dam of the 2008 National Foal Champion, Daisy Duke.  Ghia (Gallipoli) shows her qualities as a broodmare by producing top foals from different sires.  Roosevelt was handled by Derek O'Neill for breeder/owner Creekside Farm of Calgary, Alberta.  The superb bay mare, Carnaval Destiny, who earned the top score at the CSHA/AB 2008Mare Inspection at Anderson Ranch, produced a 1st Premium colt in Camelot Carnaval by the young stallion Z Camelot.

We have Silverstar Farm to thank for introducing some very interesting competition bloodlines in the colts Blitz and McFly. Blitz’s sire Clearway features some heavy hitting show jumping prowess from the legendary stallions Capitol I, Lord and Ramiro.  The powerhouse breeding of McFly’s sire, Quinar, features Quidam de Revel, Alme and, again, Calypso I, with Cor de la Bryere on McFly’s dam side.

The broodmare, Licorne resides at the family owned Four Leaf Farms in Richmond, Ontario. For the full story on Aritzia please see the announcement, “The Canadian Sport Horse Association Announces Winner of the 2009 National Foal Championship” in the CSHA National Newsletter and at www.c-s-h-a.org .This class appeared to be a great presentation of the offspring of young sires, Chablis Z, Sir Wanabi and Peugeot HPF.  The results for this regional qualifier were as follows:
